Abstract

Algal extract has long been used as a fertilizer and is known for its effect on plant growth and resistance to disease. In this work, the effect of the green algae Chaetomorpha linum  ((Muller) Kütz., 1849) extract was studied as a biofertilizer in the cultivation of wheat Triticum turgidum L. sub sp. durum . Algal extract was tested at different concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%, 8% and 10%) to assess its effect on wheat seed germination and growth. The control culture was conducted with distilled water. The results showed that the best germination rates were observed in crops with the lowest concentrations of algal extract (1% and 3%). The best growth rates were recorded in crops that received the 3% concentration of algal extract. The green algae  Chaetomorpha linum  ((Muller) Kütz., 1849) extract is showing promising results for wheat germination and growth. The present study demonstrated that seaweed liquid extract could serve as an alternative biofertilizer eco-friendly and deliver substantial economic and environmental benefits to farmers.
