In consequence of the perturbations in the Mediterranean sea, Trachypenaeus curvirostris, shrimp coming from the red sea, was introduced in 1990 in the Gabes gulf where it seems well adapted to the new conditions particularly the silting up of the sea bottom. In fact in a relatively short time, this species was landed in important quantities in some harbours of the area. In this note, we give a first outline on the morphology, ecology and on the beginning of its exploitation in the Gabes gulf. The obtained data come, on the one hand, from inquiries carried out near the fishermen and the industrial, on the other hand, from catches sampling realized in the port of Skhira in april 1995.
