Tests in 1966-67 on the suitability of the Ghar-el-Malh Lake, Tunisia, for oyster breeding indicated that development of the young is possible only in rainy years, when the salinity of the water becomes sufficiently reduced. Salinities of 40 or 42 g per litre killed the young or prevented their further development. Diversion of some of the water in the neighbouring Medjerdah oued, causing it to flow into the Lake rather than directly into the sea, would, however, create conditions favouring large-scale production.
