Throughout the year, M. barbatus and M. surmuletus feed on crustaceans, molluscs, Echinodermata and Annelida. Crustaceans constitute their preferential prey. The vacuity rate presents important monthly variations. It seems that a relationship between nutritive and reproductive cycles exists in both species of red mullet.
