The chemical industrial wastes of Gabes have caused damage in the marine environment. The concentrations of phosphate and fluoride have increased. The acidification of sea water is very strong along the beach area but further on the acid is rapidly neutralized. The phosphogypsum discharged into the sea has covered and destroyed the benthic community of an area of 230 hectares. The turbidity, the chemical contamination of sea water and the deposition of silt also accelerate the degradation of Posidonia oceanica.
