n the aim to study the relationships among the mediterranean mugilidae species in Tunisia (Mugil cephalus, Chelon labrosus, Liza aurata, Liza ramada, Liza saliens and Oedalechilus labeo), 589 bp of mitochondrial gene sequence (16S rRNA) were analysed. This gene was amplified, sequenced and analysed for all species. The Mugilidae species determination was in agreement with sequences data in GenBank and confirms the presence of Oedalechilus labeo in the Tunisian coasts in spite of its rarity. The phylogenetic tree established in this study, confirm the high divergence of Mugil cephalus. The Oedalechilus genus was valid, whereas the validity of the genus Chelon was questioned in reason of its regrouping with the Liza species.
