Abstract

We carried out the extraction of carotenoid-based astaxanthin (AX) from shrimp shells (Parapenaeus longirostris) by an alternative technique: ASE (Accelerated Solvent Extraction). We studied several parameters such as shells grinding, temperature, the nature of the solvent on the total content of carotenoids (in μg/g of shells). It appears that a fine particle size (<0.5 mm) is critical in order to maximize the extraction efficiency. The optimum temperature coupled with a mixture of both polar and non-polar solvents is a good compromise to maximize the content of total carotenoids in the obtained extract. The identification of the extract composition was performed by HPLC DAD coupled to a mass spectrometer to confirm the presence of free astaxanthin and its ester derivatives.
